News - Blog Post From Lisa Hannigan - 25/06/2008

An update from Lisa's myspace site:

For a long while now I've known how the artwork on the record was going to go. Multiple finger cramps and puncture wounds later, I finally finished stitching the lyrics last night. Today I have a headache. The two are not unrelated.

I'm really happy with it and enjoyed every minute, not so much the cramps, but they were pretty brief. Sewing away listening to records and half watching films is a fine way to spend your May.

Una and Donagh are off to Glastonbury in the morning so we've been gathering together tents and hip flasks and thick english money and packing up.

At least a quarter of Una's bag will be filled with socks. If anyone gets wet socks at Glastonbury, find Una and she'll hook you up. She'll be the one dancing floatily next to the cider bus while dressed as peter pan, no doubt. Although, it being Glastonbury, that may not narrow it down much.

Happy festival season!

Don't forget your wellies.

News - 10 Days to Barcelona! (New Album News…) - 30/05/2008

From Damien:

On June 1st myself and my friends Ryan (images) & Mia (navigation) set off on a last-minute road trip from Dublin to Barcelona, squished into my little ol' mini with a portable recording studio.

The idea is to stop off along the way in random places where I have to write and record a new song every day, either in the mini or outdoors on a rock or something.

10 days = 10 songs = album nuevo

We'll update as we go.. if we're anywhere near an internet connection that is. We hope to arrive in Barcelona on June 10th, or at least in time to go see Radiohead play on 12th and then fly home for the Leonard Cohen dates. Yay!

We had a fire to establish a new identity and show that we weren't bent down by it." A name change to Bell X1 followed the shakeup, and the band forged ahead, resolutely resuming the business of making music. "We've done quite a few shows together over the years with Damien," says Noonan, 31, "so I really feel that any kind of bad feeling has been done away with."

News - Telegraph Review of the Year - 21/12/2007

David Cheal, of the Telegraph newspaper in the UK, mentions Damien in his review of the best gigs of 2007:

Earlier in the year I saw, for the first time, why people rave about Damien Rice's live shows: I was transfixed by this feverish Irishman, whose songs flowed over with woe and despair but who made it all sound enthralling and even uplifting. The acoustic songs that formed the core of the show were done with absolute conviction. Rice has since progressed to the lucrative arena circuit; good luck to him, but I shall miss being able to watch him perform at more compact venues.

News - Letter for Aung San Suu Kyi - 06/09/2007

"Dear United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon,

We are writing to urge you to personally intervene to secure the release of the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Aung San Suu Kyi. As you know, she has been held under house arrest in the Southeast Asian country of Burma for 12 of the past 17 years. On June 19th, she spent her 62nd birthday under house arrest.

Aung San Suu Kyi is not just a charismatic leader, she is the elected leader of the Burmese people. In Burma's last election, she won 82% of the seats in parliament, yet the military regime cruelly locked her up along with many members of her party. Meanwhile, according to the United Nations expert on human rights in Burma, the ruling military regime has burned down or otherwise destroyed over 3,000 villages in eastern Burma, forcing over 1 million and a half people to flee their homes.

This courageous, brave woman whom many call "Burma's Nelson Mandela" should be released and the military regime should end its attacks on civilians. We urge you to take action to secure her immediate release."

News - Lisa at the Electric Picnic - 03/09/2007

Lisa played at the Electric Picnic festival in Ireland on Sunday. Jim Carroll from the Irish Times writes about it in his blog:

But the real Irish winner on Sunday was Lisa Hannigan. Now unshackled from Damien Rice, her short, breezy and assured set on the Body & Soul stage was enough to make you realise where the real star-power was in that duo. Backed by a band who knew when to step back as well as step up, Hannigan’s songs are a promising combination of new-school folk and old-school pop. The next stage for her will be an album in early 2008.

Josh became friends with some Irish musicians, notably Glen Hansard of The Frames and became very popular with audiences throughout Ireland.

Now, about six years later, Josh has won international critical and popular acclaim. He has just released his fifth studio album in the U.S., which has been described by Amazon.com as, "what may be the best album of 2007, hands down, by the most under-accorded American musical genius".

The album, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter is now on release in the the U.S. and Canada. It will be released in Ireland on September 7th and worldwide on October 1st. Josh will be touring extensively, including throughout North America from the end of September until early November. Josh will be touring in Ireland at the end of November.

"After climbing on the stage, with the help of a security man, he hand me his beloved Lowden Acoustic (man, if holding that guitar wasn't enough!). He asked if I required a plectrum. I asked for a capo and a plectrum and asked the audience if they wanted to hear 'Cold Water'.

Damien said he would sing Lisa's parts while I led the band in with the guitar.

Amazing!!! it was me, Damien & his band playing to the Hexagon.

I got some amazing comments from Damien, the guys and the crowd. I can't believe I sang in front of 1000 + Damien fans, Damien & the guys.

Myself and a group of friends have been writing songs together, and we're making a record for nature. We're making the record and we're going to release it, and all the royalties and all the money generated from the sales just go to nature, to giving back in some way. It's very weird being a musician, because people think you've got a great job, it's so magical. Whereas I sit down and I think of myself as somebody who manufactures plastic. So we're going to do that album, and I'm very excited about it.

Yet I still drive my car. I still fly. I still tour. I still make plastic cds. So here I stand, a hypocrite, an addict, like so many others, looking for help. Ironically we look to the scientists and politicians for solutions. Yet politicians paid the scientists to design the machines that dug for the oil that fuelled the machines that fuel the problem. Still, I am hoping our minds will open like parachutes and save us before we crash."
